Traditional Maypole for Beltane

Traditional Maypole for Beltane

Tomorrow we welcome in another new season, and turn in the wheel of the year. Beltane!

Beltane goes by many names, but you may be most familiar with “May Day”. Visions of Maypoles and flowers, fire festivals, and celebration come to mind, yes? Perfect! That is exactly what Beltane is all about!

You don’t need to craft a giant Maypole to celebrate Beltane, however. There are so many fun and creative ways to kickstart this new season. If you do decide to make a Maypole, you can always make a small one! It doesn’t need to tower over your house… in fact it can be small enough to place on your altar! Let’s take a look at a few different ways you can celebrate Beltane.

Rituals & Activities to celebrate beltane

Garden Blessing

One of my favorite rituals is blessing my garden. Whether you have flowers or vegetation planted in your garden, it is the perfect time to say a little blessing to cultivate more prosperity.

Include Colorful Ribbons in your Beltane celebrations and Rituals. The ribbons serve as a physical representation of your wishes or intentions. Each ribbon that you craft should represent a wish or intention. You can make these colorful ribbons and tie them on your mini-maypole, on the trees and bushes in your yard, around your home, on your altar, your purse, or anything that you wish!

Morning Dew

A beautiful addition to celebrating the magick of Beltane is collecting the morning dew. You can use this Morning Dew in rituals, cleansing sprays, spells, and elixirs. The morning dew from Beltane is said to call in good health, happiness, and prosperity.

Beltane is also a time to focus our energies inward on our feelings of Self Love and Self Esteem. Confidence is forged in fire, and fire is also an important element to include in your practice today. Beltane actually translates to “lucky fire” or “bright fire”. If you have the means, and can do so safely, create a bonfire and celebrate with friends, family, music, and delicious foods. If you don’t have the ability to create a bonfire, you can always set the intention and light a candle (or ten!) instead!

One of the most interesting aspects of Beltane is its astrological timing. Since Beltane occurs during the zodiac Taurus, it offers immense strength and stability for any magick or intentions created. Taurus is an earth sign, so you can incorporate this into your ritual, visualizing your intentions and wishes rooting down deep into the soil. Expect your magick to work for a long time, with the extra bit of chutzpah that Taurus energy brings to Beltane.

Essential Oils

Since this is the perfect time to cultivate our Self Love and Self Esteem even more, you can of course utilize essential oils in your practice. Here is a blend that you can add to your diffuser, to a roller bottle, or to an elixir blend with herbs.

  • 2 drops Geranium

  • 4 drops Bergamot

  • 1 drop Cinnamon

Tigers Eye, Carnelian, Obsidian, and Garnet are all great choices to work with for the Fiery energy of Beltane. You can also work with specific crystals that carry the energy of your intentions. Don’t limit your self to fire energy.

There are of course no limits either, to how you celebrate this beautiful day. Look inward, tap into your own divine essence, and take inspired action on what calls to you.
